Connecting Crouch End and Hornsey with news, views and information

It was just about a year ago that Lynne announced her triumph in this battle "A valued local service has been saved for at least another six months ". Now Royal Mail has been in touch again with further plans to move the sorting office. I suspect that the Saturday morning queue to redeem "you were out" cards is one of the longest and most reliable in the area. I think we should sign Lynne's petition again, and hope for a further postponement. Click on the link in her email below.

Dear Adrian,

Royal Mail has announced that our local delivery office in Hornsey will be moved to the Bush Industrial Estate in N19 in September. I have launched a petition, calling for them to rethink – and at the very least, for Royal Mail to provide a replacement free parcel collection point in the local (N8) area.

After local residents and I successfully campaigned to prevent the closure in 2012, Royal Mail assured me that we would be kept informed of any future plans. Yet this came out of the blue. Less than three weeks ago, a Royal Mail representative wrote to me saying: ‘I can confirm that there are no plans in place to close Hornsey Delivery Office.’

This is simply unacceptable. Royal Mail have not kept us informed, and not taken into account the views and needs of local people and customers when making this decision.

The delivery office and parcel collection point are vital and valuable local resources. Many residents simply won’t be able to travel all the way to N19 to pick up their parcels – so will have to pay for re-delivery.

Even if we can’t save the office itself, the local Lib Dems and I will fight with residents again to keep a parcel collection service in N8. I have already called a meeting with the top officers at Royal Mail and will be putting the case very strongly to them.

Please do sign the petition, so we can show Royal Mail just how important our local parcel collection point is.

Best,

P.S.  Could you pass the petition link on to your local friends and neighbours, so that they can sign too? The full link is: http://eepurl.com/Y7wj1

I have just read Lesley Ramm's article on Harringay Online and while I have not checked all the details the new location sounds awful. Worse than inconvenient. Even though the Lib DEm petition is also a way of harvesting your email address supporting it may gove weight to Lynne's campaign.

Thank you very much for signing the petition calling on Royal Mail to rethink their closure of Hornsey Sorting Office. We have 1000 signatures and counting.

Last week I met with Royal Mail representatives, to tell them what you and I think of their plans.

Unfortunately, they were adamant about closing the office on Tottenham Lane – as the lease on their building is up. But they were willing to discuss possible replacement services and pick up points.

As a result of our campaign and petition, Royal Mail have agreed to attempt redelivery between 7am – 9am, the next day after the first delivery attempt. It will be the first time that this service has been trialled anywhere in the country, outside of the busy Christmas period.

Customers could also arrange a free redelivery on a Saturday. Royal Mail are also introducing a scheme where parcels can be left with a designated neighbour.

This is some progress, but I still feel it doesn’t go far enough. I think there needs to be more specific redelivery times, which can be chosen by customers – to avoid disruption and spending any hours waiting in for a parcel at the weekend.

I have put these ideas to Royal Mail and will let you know when we receive a response.

I have also requested that they meet with the postmaster at Hornsey Post Office, to try and find a way to provide a free parcel pick up point at this location. Currently, Royal mail will leave parcels at the Office for pick up, but at a cost of £1.50 to the customer.

Please do let me know if you have any thoughts on this.

P.S.  Please do continue to share the petition among your local friends, family and neighbours – so we can prove to Royal Mail how important proper replacement service are. You can send them this link: www.tinyurl.com/HornseyDeliveryOffice

Royal Mail has confirmed that this move will definitely take place

We shouldn't be surprised, privatise the company and cut the services.

Lynne was in favour of the privatisation as I recall.
