Mental health awareness campaign launched

An art exhibition, football match, and bike ride are among the events taking place across Haringey next week, in a campaign designed to raise awareness and change attitudes towards mental health.

The week-long series of activities will get underway on Monday 6 October with a cycle ride organised by Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health Trust. On Wednesday service users, carers and mental health professionals will don their football boots for a 5-a-side football competition, before an art exhibition consisting of paintings and drawings made by service users opens at Wood Green Library on Thursday.

The week will culminate with a grand event at the 639 enterprise centre in Tottenham on Friday to coincide with world Mental Health Day, where Haringey’s annual public health report examining the state of mental health and wellbeing in the borough will be launched.

Haringey Council staff will also sign Time to Change’s pledge (external link) affirming their commitment to tackling mental health stigma and discrimination. The event will also include entertainment by local musicians, singers, comedians and drama groups.

Cllr Peter Morton, Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing said:

"We know that almost two thirds of people with mental distress in Haringey are trying to cope on their own, rather than seeking professional support.

"This weeklong series of activities is a great way of engaging the public and explaining how common mental health problems are. We want to encourage people to come forward and access the first-class support available in the borough, which will help them build the resilience to cope when times get tough."

The campaign has is being organised by Haringey Council’s public health team and Mental Health Support Association alongside local NHS partners and Mind.
