Connecting Crouch End and Hornsey with news, views and information
Hornsey and Wood Green Labour Party is running a community survey on its website, and invites all local people and groups to take part. It's a genuine attempt to find out local people's priorities, and the results will be published and inform party campaigning in 2012. So don't hold back!
You can find the survey here
I've just completed the questionnaire and it strikes me it is little more than an attempt to harvest email addresses for the despatch of election literature. The questions about race are only intrusive, I don't believe that political parties have any statutory requirement to satisfy diversity legislation.
The questions asking me to score priorities on a scale of 1 - 5 become almost meaningless - of course I care 'a lot' about all the topics - what does a list of straight 5s tell anyone about anything. The questionnaire is almost as bad as the Haringey Health and Wellbeing consultation - it simply is not possible to strongly disagree with the aspiration "Give every child the best possible start in life" other than to quibble with its grammatical impossibility, so there is no point asking it!
I started to do this survey believing that it could be a genuine attempt to find out local people's priorities. However, I abandoned it before completion because of the quantity of equalities monitoring questions and the scales (see: Ivan O'Pinion).
Like some of those telephone marketing surveys, this is survey that, like any political party, is trying to promote something.
