Connecting Crouch End and Hornsey with news, views and information
Thornton’s Budgens and Hornsey YMCA are delighted to join forces to bring Community Games to Crouch End and Belsize Park. A national initiative, the Community Games are inspired by the 2012 Olympics are designed to encourage communities to gather and participate in sports and cultural activities.
If you are a organising a street party, school fair or community event then why not bring the spirit of the Olympics to your event by making it a Community Games?
Our local slant on the community games idea has two dimensions:
1. Lets Party!
Designed to encourage and support people having street parties and other community events in our area, Thornton’s Budgens Pennies for Plastic Trust Fund has donated £4,000 to provide a resource pack that people running street or community parties can access. This will include such items as tug of war ropes, sack race materials, kit for other sporting events and even a bouncy castle! We have podiums and can provide a set of medals for events. So it’s real easy for you to arrange your own Community Games right on your doorstep.
In addition, the YMCA and ProActive have produced a Community Games toolkit guide for holding events, which covers all aspects, including planning, ideas for activities, promoting your event, etc. The YMCA’s Community Games Co-ordinator will be able to assist with your planning a preparation to make sure that yours is a safe, fun and memorable event. To complete the picture, Thornton’s Budgens can provide your food and drink to make a really memorable event!
All you have to do is contact the Hornsey YMCA to book the resources and food you need for your event. Please speak to either Hayley Ballard or Jim Shepley on 020 8342 5112 (option 1).
2. Your own Community Games
Fancy organising your own larger scale community games or developing a sporting idea that will have a lasting impact in your community?
Thornton’s Budgens Pennies for Plastic Trust have allocated £10,000 towards funding these events in the boroughs of Camden and Haringey.
To qualify, the event or idea needs to be a new one and take place in one of these boroughs. We will contribute up to a maximum of £500 per idea/event. To apply please follow the instructions here.
The closing date is the final day of the 2012 Olympics, 12th August.
