Dear Hornsey, Crouch End and Muswell Hill Ward Councillors,
On behalf of Councillor Canver, it is with pleasure that I write to inform you of a Smarter Travel Event to be held on Saturday 19th November in Hornsey. The event is to be held in the lay-by area of High Street adjacent to Cross Lane. Normal traffic flows on the main High Street will remain unaffected. A temporary road closure will be in force in the layby between 9am and 5pm with the event running between 11am and 3pm.
The event will showcase the Smarter Travel ‘roadshow’ trailer and associated publicity material. On the day Bite CP, who run the trailer on our behalf, will supply two smoothie drink making bikes, two virtual bike ride devices, promotional gifts and staff to undertake the Smarter Travel survey of visitors.
The event will also include a Dr Bike maintenance team who will provide free servicing of bicycles for visitors and the Crazy Bike Company will have a selection of bicycles and tricycles for visitors to ride. The Police’s ‘Exchanging Places’ initiative will be at the event, providing visitors with the opportunity to sit in the driver's seat of a HGV to get a better understanding of what the driver can and can’t see, especially in regards to cyclists on the nearside and directly in front of the vehicle.
There will also be a stall run by a local cycle shop, selling various bicycle accessories. The standard Smarter Travel questionnaire has been adapted to contain additional questions relating to road safety in the area. Following the event, and with your assistance, these will be prioritised taking into account available budget for this project and ‘DIY Streets’ style consultations undertaken at a neighbourhood level at the chosen locations.
We will hold a free raffle for those visitors that complete the questionnaire, who will have the chance to win a new bicycle. The Hornsey Area has been identified in the Local Implementation Plan programme for treatment as a DIY Streets initiative. Due to the size of the area, it is hoped that the Smarter Travel event will aid the identification of key areas that can be focused upon for the DIY Streets treatment. A DIY Streets project has been successfully undertaken in collaboration with Sustrans in the Langham Road/Turnpike Lane area. The initiative involves working in partnership with local residents to develop innovative traffic calming solutions to address speed issues and to encourage more walking and cycling. It also aims to improve the streetscape of a neighbourhood and helps to build community links. I will keep you informed of the outcomes of the event and the subsequent proposed programme, including future Smarter Travel events in the area. In the meantime, I hope you will encourage your resident’s to attend and I look forward to seeing you on the day. Yours sincerely, Tony KennedyGroup ManagerSustainable Transport
