People who learned scything at the Meadow Orchard Project last year loved it and said it was a meditative and very enjoyable exercise. The reason for doing it is to preserve the grasslands habitat at the meadow. Half of the meadow needs to be scythed. It is not a large area, but every bit of grass land is valuable as the UK has lost a shocking 97% of its grasslands since the 1970s (statistic from the Grasslands Trust). Our Meadow has 13 different grass types as well as flowering plants, yellow meadow ants and green woodpeckers.
