Back in England the government is still building windmills . . .

Meanwhile, here in Ho Chi Minh City the man in the street continues not to give a Phu Quoc and continues to ride around on his automatic motor bike, past countless neon lights and air conditioned buildings, buses and cars. The number and ubiquity of these bikes causes every visitor to marvel and I am no exception. There are far more of them, surely, than the roads can support, and yet as they weave…

Exotic trip

So, I am in Dubai International.airport on my way to Ho Chi Minh City. I count that as exotic. so far the trip is going quite well. Economy class on Emirates is no more spacious than other airlines, but the entertainment system was phenomenal. It is some time since I've been on a long haul flight and maybe all other airlines are now this good, but I enjoyed watching the take off via cctv, while listening to the sound track of my youth. Four digit channel numbers does suggest a wealth of…

The Devonshire Pub

I Have recently just been barred from this pub. I was asked at least three times what i wished to eat by one of the obnoxious lady's who worked behind the bar!!!! take it from me. I then one the third time of asking raised the tone of my voice???? In reply i got what you could call a classic reply" Dont shout at me i refuse to serve you" I have always found the staff there condescending and patronizing. Not what i call amicable or friendly. I don't even drink, and only used pub to get food.…

Comedy Downstairs at the King's Head

Last Saturday, on the spur of the moment, and because of The Englishman's recent interest in stand-up comedy (more about this later in the year), we decided to check out the Comedy Cabaret Downstairs at The King's Head. I'd heard great many good things about the acts that perform there, so I was very surprised when we got tickets at the door…

A Visit to the House of Commons

Watching the British MPs debate a proposed military action into Syria in the House of Commons last night, I was reminded of a visit Daughter and I took to the Houses of Parliament a few weeks ago. I've always wanted to go, mainly because of my first degree.

When I first moved to the UK, I was in the process of writing a thesis…

Second Childhood, zoos and the cinema of the ridiculous

I had a day yesterday which was very much a reversion to my childhood, made up of a trip to the zoo and seeing the Lone Ranger at the pictures.

The zoo was very much a part of my childhood as we lived for a while in Camden Town and Regent's Park was not much more than a walk away. Of course that was a long time ago before Lord Snowdon's aviary had been built, and the polar bear's…

Pub crawl in Crouch End

On a complete spur of the moment, the Englishman and I decided to go on a pub crawl last night. He'd been going on and on about the fact that I'd not finished The Knowledge (this self-imposed task involves visiting every pub in the area) and thought last night was good as any to finally achieve my goal.

But in order to finish the task, first we needed to…
