Why Finsbury Park Track is important to Haringey

It is important to recognise that whilst Finsbury Park Track andis located in the  London Borough of Haringey, it is close to the borders of Islington and Hackney Boroughs.  Neither Hackney nor Islington has an athletics track of its own and therefore the location of the Finsbury Park Track is an important strategic location which serves residents from three boroughs. In the continuing context of Britain's austerity programme it is quite possible that Haringey will lose the New River Community Athletics Track to further cuts, which would leave the Finsbury Park track as the only one in the three boroughs.
Haringey's ambitions for sports participation and health initiatives are based on strategies and important among these are
1) Run! Jump! Throw! London Borough of Haringey Athletics Development Plan in which Athletics is identified as a priority sport for Haringey and Haringey has secured funding to support an Athletics Activator to lead on athletics development in the borough from 2011 to 2014. The vision of the strategy is to promote and provide athletics activity to increase opportunities for local communities.
2) Haringey Council’s Sport and Physical Activity Strategy (2005) aims, amongst other things, to increase participation in sport and physical activity and encourage an active lifestyle. The existence of a high quality track would be an important part of this strategy.
