Connecting Crouch End and Hornsey with news, views and information
I went to the King's Head Christmas pub quiz in the downstairs room - might have been the 22nd December.
Obviously the evening starts with a round of drinks and luckily just in front of me at the bar was a group of young people who 1) don't buy rounds, 2) don't carry cash and 3) can't read a menu so I had plenty of time to study the options as I waited for each of them to choose laboriously and then pay very slowly.
The list of stuff on offer is impressive. Real ales were Yuletide, DoomBar and Winter Warmer. I only had the capacity to try the Winter Warmer, but it was nutty brown and good. There was a choice of two weissbiers (Hoegaarden and Franziskaner), there was a strawberry flavoured lager, and Leffe Blonde all on draught, any of which might have tempted me. The ciders I'm not so keen on but there were several of those, and I believe that some people drink lager (Estrella?)
Harry was running the quiz. I don't know if he does it every week but for Christmas he was manic. Every round had a theme tune, almost every question had a sound clip. Harry had a microphone and tendency to wander from table to table talking into it, so I found the whole thing quite stressful. Plus of course the choice of questions. Now I pride myself on my general knowledge and I get on tolerably shouting out the answers to University Challenge, Mastermind and Who Wants . . . . But during the course of this particular evening the only question I got completely right was "Who plays their home games at White Hart Lane?" - of course every one else did too. I was the only one at our table who knew that "Satisfaction" was a Rolling Stones song, but that apart the young people I was with did a lot lot better than I did and the team had a comfortable mid-table finish.
I think I must try some more pub quizzes, try and find one that suits me. Any suggestions which to try, or volunteers to share my ignorance let me know. (Adrian opinion8@rocketmail.com or post a reply)
