Young People’s Strategy Consultation Haringey's strategy for 3 years - closes 17th Feb

Young People’s Strategy Consultation

We want your views on our draft 3-year strategy for young people in Haringey. Your views will shape what can be delivered now and in the future.

We know lots of organisations work with young people in our borough and no single organisation can deliver everything for a young person; nor is it right for them to do so. With limited resources it’s important that we all have a clear focus on what our priorities are, or should be, and what outcomes we're working towards.

The consultation runs from 21 December 2011 until 17 February 2012.

We've created the draft vision, outcomes and priorities below so that we can better join up services to meet the needs of young people in Haringey. Please tell us your views on them. You can download a copy of the full draft strategy from the attached files section below.

Proposed vision, outcomes and priorities

Our proposed vision:

We want young people in Haringey to be inspired to achieve their full potential and make a positive contribution to their community.

Proposed outcomes and priorities

Outcome: Positive aspirations

We know that for young people to achieve their goals they need to be in a supportive environment. If young people aren’t clear how to reach their goals this leads to disillusionment and drop out, particularly from education. We want to ensure that work with young people is in an atmosphere that encourages, supports and challenges.

  • Ensure services have a positive impact on young people’s lives

Outcome: Reduced risky behaviour

Engaging in managed risk taking is an intrinsic part of growing up. However some young people need extra support to ensure that their risky behaviour is positively negotiated so there is no lasting harm. We want to ensure that young people can be supported through their teenage years, particularly those who are demonstrating that their behaviour might become out of control and lead to unacceptable risk taking as an adult.

  • Make sure there are systems in place for at risk young people to receive help and support before their situations escalate
  • Ensure young people feel safe in all environments (e.g. at school and on the street)

Outcome: Positive participation

Young people consistently tell us they wish to be involved in decisions that affect them. This is good practice and also provides young people with valuable skills: negotiation, conflict resolution, communication and encourages a sense of community.

  • Ensure young people have a voice so they can, if they want, contribute to local, regional and national decision making

Outcome: Accessible and appropriate youth services across the borough

We want young people to participate in a quality service irrespective of who is providing it and where it is. We want to be able to prove we are offering services that represent the best value for money.

  • Provide evidence that services are valued by young people
  • Working with the third sector, shape youth services across the borough and make sure that the third sector is prepared for commissioning

Who we're consulting

We are consulting widely about this strategy, but especially want to hear from:

  • young people - about what services you think will help you achieve your goals, reduce unacceptable risk taking, be involved in decisions that affect you and have access to youth services across the borough
  • providers of services for young people - about our vision and how best to achieve these outcomes through existing and/or the development of new services
  • parents and carers of young people - about how they think we can best do these things
