Connecting Crouch End and Hornsey with news, views and information

Vive le Crouch End @Crouch_End @crouchendlabour

The clever people at the Crouch End Neighbourhood Forum have found a blog, written in French apparently by a shy French person who once lived in Crouch End, exhorting the French to come and visit us. One of the main attractions is the range and number of independent shops, a subject which the planning based forum must consider under the heading of its 'Economy' working party. Every time Crouch Enders are asked what they like about the area 'Independent Shops' comes up near the top of the list. Contrast this expression of interest with the reality of the queues in the supermarket dubbed 'Waitalot'.

But if Independent shops really are important to the area, what should the Forum do about it. What local planning policies can it devise to stave of the arrival of "clone town" in Crouch End? What projects could it begin to maintain the shopping character of the area? If indeed it should do such a thing. Perhaps we'd all be better off shopping at major chain stores, with their purchasing power and customer service departments. BHS and Woolworth's, to name but two.

Please do read the CENF blog and offer your suggestions in one of the ways they list at the foot of the article.

Dunn's the baker
