Coronavirus (COVID-19) update

Stay home, save lives

Last night the Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced even tougher rules on social distancing in light of the Coronavirus outbreak. Put simply, you must stay home to save lives.

What does this mean in Haringey?

Shops selling non-essential goods will all be closed immediately and all weddings and civil partnerships are not allowed to take place by law.

Parks will remain open, but cafés, toilets, play equipment, outdoor gyms and sports courts will all be closed immediately. Both Marcus Garvey and Wood Green Customer Service Centres are now closed.

To highlight the urgency for compliance, police will now be able to disperse public gatherings of more than two people (excluding people you live with) and fine anyone seen flouting the rules.

A message from Dr Will Maimaris, Haringey Council Director of Public Health

https://mcusercontent.com/d154b1b068c54fa3558c3cb26/images/265e3758..." width="200" class="CToWUd a6T"/>It is absolutely vital that we all follow the government’s advice so that we can protect ourselves and those most vulnerable in our society from the potentially lethal Coronavirus.

Only go out for:

  • Essential shopping and do this only once or twice a week if you can
  • To collect medicines or go to essential and urgent medical appointments
  • Exercise (no more than once a day)
  • To deliver food to vulnerable relatives/friends – this should be left on doorsteps.

When you do go out:

  • Do not meet with any people outside your household
  • Stay 2 metres away from others at all times.

Keep each other safe, stay at home.

If you develop a cough or fever, no matter how mild, you should self-isolate at home for 7 days from when your symptoms start. Those living with you should do the same. Read the NHS tips on self-isolation and check the latest government advice regarding the coronavirus.

If you think you’re experiencing symptoms of Coronavirus, do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy, or hospital. Call NHS 111 or visit the NHS website for further information

Closure of reuse and recycling centres

In response to the developing situation around Coronavirus and the latest government advice, the North London Waste Authority (NLWA) will close all reuse and recycling centres (RRCs) to the public for the foreseeable future, effective today.

Haringey and our partners are working hard to maintain waste collection services. The closure of the RRCs is likely to increase pressure on local waste collection services. Residents should avoid producing unnecessary waste. This will help us keep critical waste services running.

For further information on the closures of RRCs, please visit the NLWA Wise Up To Waste website.

Report profiteering

Our Trading Standards team have been made aware of a number of shops in the borough hiking up prices (profiteering) of essential items as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Competition and Marketing Agency (CMA) have successfully prosecuted a number of businesses and have now set up an online reporting tool for profiteering cases.

If you become aware of any such practises, please report it to the CMA and Haringey Trading Standards via Report It, Contact Frontline or do it online.
