Haringey will bloom in biodiversity

Publication date: Friday 14 June 2013

This year’s Haringey in Bloom will be looking for biodiversity as well as beauty.

The free council competition, sponsored by the Sunshine Garden Centre, encourages and rewards those who take pride in their environment and improve the landscape with floral and shrub displays.

This year each entry will be judged on whether it is sustainable as well as on the impact the colour and use of plants has on the immediate area.

Sustainable gardening is about creating green areas that attract and encourage wildlife and contribute to local biodiversity.

Money-off vouchers are available for people to download to get 20% off plants provided by the Sunshine Garden Centre and the council run Wolves Lane Nursery, to help prepare their entry into the competition.

Cllr Nilgun Canver, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said:

"Haringey is already a very green borough so this year we are adding another challenge for all entrants. We aim to encourage all gardeners to make the most of Haringey's green spaces and think about the way they garden and how they encourage biodiversity with their displays.

"Each entry will be judged on whether it is sustainable and does the most it can to encourage wildlife, as well as on how beautiful it looks."

Award categories are for best:

  • Front Garden
  • Allotment Plot
  • Community Garden
  • Greener School Grounds
  • Business Premises

Simon Haines, Retail Manager at the Sunshine Garden Centre, said:

"We're thrilled to again be part of this annual competition, encouraging Haringey residents to improve and brighten the borough with floral and shrub displays.

"Year on year we see the efforts that residents and community groups go to make the borough bloom and we’re really excited and keen to see this year’s entries."

  • Winners of Haringey in Bloom could see their entry form part of Haringey Council's submission to the London in Bloom competition.
