Connecting Crouch End and Hornsey with news, views and information

. . . . . . or an absurd mechanism to allow some crimes to go uninvestigated. Opinion on Facebook appears divided, but since this item appeared on the Crouch End Appreciation Society (you need to have a Facebook account to see it) the number of votes has shot up from about 20 to almost 100 (and from 1 in August and 3 in September).

I'd say that this is a genuine attempt by the local police force to engage with the public. Obviously, there must be priorities, and testing public opinion like this gives at least some pointers as to where efforts should be directed. It presumably does not mean that if an armed robbery takes place, or someone reports a murder, that the police say "Sorry, we're only doing moped theft this month".

Speaking of which, this is a scary video from the Islington Gazette of a moped pillion passenger stealing a laptop from inside an Archway cafe. This latter day Dick Turpin  is in the cafe for four seconds. Jack Reacher might be sufficiently alert to predict the problem and intervene, but normal human beings don't even realise what has happened until it's over.
