LOCAL INITIATIVES

Below you'll find an updated list of local food and drink deliveries, as well as online courses and events. Look out for how to cook with nettles (and more) with OmVed Gardens this evening (see below). If you're reading this on the www and would like to subscribe to future updates you can sign up here (scroll to the bottom of the page). You can also follow us on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter for micro-updates.

Village Raw is foremost a print magazine focusing on the area's culture and community. The next print magazine is imminent and if you'd like to receive it posted to your door you can subscribe here. Things are going to be tougher for everyone in the coming months and Village Raw isn't immune to this - it's a magazine by and for the community.

ONLINE AND IN PRINT

A DIARY OF OUR TIMES

One of the initiatives we'd like to do is for community members to submit diary entries for April. We'll compile a range of these for the next issue of Village Raw - capturing a slice of the thoughts and feelings prevalent at this difficult time. Look out for more details of this in coming emails/social media posts.

If you're interested you can submit your thoughts/feelings/experiences, once a day or whenever you feel inclined to write something, by emailing hello@villageraw.com. Make sure to add DIARY in the email subject field.

By submitting your diary entry you give us permission to edit (not the meaning but we may have to shorten entries) and publish your text in Village Raw.

THE BENEFITS OF NETTLES - WEDS 6pm!!

Stingy and itchy yes, but mega nutritious and delicious if you know what to do with them. It just so happens that OmVed Garden's Vicky and Arthur do. Join them today on Instagram Live at 6pm BST for cooking with nettles and a conversation on their medicinal qualities. No nettles? Worry not, they’ll be talking over a few other leafy seasonal greens.

AFK'S GOT TALENT

Like many charities, myAFK are adjusting to the times and continuing to the best they can - supporting disabled children and young people locally and nationally, keeping them connected in new ways to ensure that they maintain well being and keep developing as individuals. They want we to ensure that the whole community stays connected, so have launched their very first virtual event - AFK’s Got Talent!

It’s easy to get involved, all you need to do is record a short video (3 mins max) showing them your talents at home! This could be anything you like- singing, dancing, telling jokes, a performance with your pet, sporting skills, baking/cooking or artwork! Get as creative at you like! Send your video to gottalent@my-afk.org by Easter Sunday (12th April) for your chance to be selected as our final 12! Check out their website for more details! https://www.my-afk.org/gottalent

THE FUTURE OF FASHION

Muswell Hill Sustainability Group are hosting a free webinar with Safia Minney, local resident and founder of the People Tree clothing company, to discuss the "Future of Fashion".

  • What is sustainable fashion?
  • How can we reframe fashion in the climate and ecological breakdown?
  • How can Fair Trade, livelihoods from organic cotton farming and craft production usher in social and environmental justice?

We have seen how cancelled orders by major clothing brands have resulted in closed factories and millions of garment workers facing starvation.  How should we promote a new economy based on the Fair Trade principles to meet the Sustainable Development Goals and Net Zero?

Numbers are limited: please book here and we'll send you a Zoom link before the webinar.

THE VIRTUAL WORKSHOP N4

Lisa Price is a local artist and runs a Creative Art Space called The WORKSHOP N4 which she started in 2017. Responding to present times Lisa has a new way of teaching her art classes. Lisa will be running her art club through a private Instagram page called @theworkshopathome, aimed at children 5-11 years. Although this is an ‘online’ art club it will give your children time away from the screen too!

Each week Lisa will upload a video to the Instagram page @theworkshopathome, setting out an Art Challenge. The video will focus on either an artist to inspire the lesson or a key word to open creative thinking and imagination. During each video Lisa will introduce the children to the theme and show them examples of how they can use different mediums, tips and tricks and how to explore that weeks theme in more detail.

As an addition to this Lisa will also be posting 4 mini challenges every week that will keep your children’s creativity going throughout the week. Instagram Art Club allows you as parents to have the freedom to work out your own schedules at home and can log into the challenges at any time and as many times as you want. It also gives children the opportunity to interact with each other and Lisa through Instagram, ask questions, post their artwork for other children to see and create an online art community, just like the community Lisa has worked hard to create at her studio.

Book your space and find out more here www.theworkshopn4.com/virtualartclub
