Connecting Crouch End and Hornsey with news, views and information

I've submitted a Freedom of Information request about Middey's. Have we, the council tax payers, at least been getting our rent, while the eyesore continues.

Dear Haringey Borough Council,
I am writing to make an open government request for all the information to which I am entitled under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
If this request is too wide or unclear, I would be grateful if you could contact me as I understand that under the Act, you are required to advise and assist anyone making such a request. If any of this information is already in the public domain, please can you direct me to it, with page references and URLs if necessary.
If the release of any of this information is prohibited on the grounds of breach of confidence, I ask that you supply me with copies of the confidentiality agreement and remind you that information should not be treated as confidential if such an agreement has not been signed.
I understand that you are required to respond to my request within the 20 working days after you receive this letter. I would be grateful if you could confirm in writing that you have received this request.
Please tell me whether rent has been collected by Haringey for the old electricity showroom on Hornsey Town hall Square since Spiazzo moved out, and Middey's put up advertising.
I do not believe this information to be commercially confidential , I do not request details of the amount of rent passing, simply to be reassured that as some compensation for the loss of public amenity at the site, council tax payers have at least received the relevant income.

Yours faithfully,

Adrian Essex

I think there may have been a tenant after Spiazzo, but before Middey's called Crouch End Kitchen. Apologies for missing this.

Thanks Adrian. I was going to do exactly that myself. Perhaps our councillors could also help?

I simply cannot imagine any business would be happy to leave the premise empty for a year if they are actually paying rent on it. Given its prominent location and size, the annual rent must be around 100,000!

Please do try the councillors. I'm not on their Christmas card list.

FoI response - in record time and completely unequivocal

Thank you for your request for information received on 22 February 2017,
in which you asked whether rent has been collected by Haringey for the old
electricity showroom on Hornsey Town Hall Square since Spiazzo moved out,
and Middey's put up advertising.

My response is as follows:

I can confirm that rent has been paid up to date.

Still very odd.

I'd like to think there's a provision in the lease between the council and Spiazzo / Middeys that the premise cannot be left empty for more than a certain period of time?!

Have a feeling CROUCH END KITCHEN may have been another name for Spiazzo.  My understanding of the problem is that it is connected with the disposal of something relating to the fact of that building originally being the telephone exchange for the area. It was a plaque of some sort and nobody seems to know what happened to it. Can't remember where I read that but gist of it was that planning permission wouldn't be granted for Middey's until the Plaque was located or somebody had information about it's whereabouts...Does it really matter why not just let it go ahead and give us back our lovely green space where we could sit and have lunch or coffee or a glass of wine...

This is a mystery to the whole of Crouch End.  We endured years of bad food and drink and rudest of service under Spiazzo.  And now we are deprived of our place in the sun with a cup of something - for how much longer?

Please, Will, go ahead and ask away about what on earth is planned and report back.

Also, is it true that these premises are to be bundled in with the Town Hall, Square and Green for FEC to develop?
