Connecting Crouch End and Hornsey with news, views and information

This report from the Ham and High documents what might be the end of a 130 year business right in the heart of Crouch End.

"Walter Purkis & Sons was forced to stop smoking fish in the building behind its Crouch End Broadway shop on December 21, after a Haringey Council officer said the family-run business would be fined each time it was caught using it.

Unbeknown to either Walter or his son John, the council had been monitoring the smokehouse since November after it received a single complaint about the smell and the smoke.

Crouch End councillor David Winskill is equally incensed, and has vowed to make it a “top priority” to get the smokehouse up and running again so “the best kippers in London” can once again be sold.

“I’m going to be working with Mr Purkis and officers to make sure there is a speedy resolution to this and to see whether the order which has been served actually reflects the intention of the law,” he said."
