Connecting Crouch End and Hornsey with news, views and information

Lynne Featherstone has long been campaigning for Haringey schools to receive Inner London funding in line with its Inner London expenses. The text below is an email from her asking for support in responding to a consultation. She includes an email address and a suggested response.

Full information about the consultation can be found on this site: http://bit.ly/ehRD4i. Here you can find full consultation documents and a response form.

Dear Mr Essex,

Our school funding system is complicated and unfair, not least for schools here in Haringey. It is unfair because our schools are considered as outer-London when it comes to government funding but we have to pay inner-London costs such as teachers’ salaries. This means that pupils at Haringey’s schools currently get £1540 less than pupils in neighbouring boroughs like Hackney and Camden but our schools have similar expenses.

And this funding gap has widened, from a difference of about £730 in 2007 when I started my campaign for fair funding, to more than double that today. That is not fair, and that comes from an unfair funding system.

Thankfully Liberal Democrats in Government are doing something about this. This week the Department for Education launched the first of a two-part consultation into the school funding system. These two consultations give us the best chance we have had in years to push for a fairer system and fairer funding for our schools.

To make the best possible case for Haringey I need your help. This, the first of the two consultations, is looking at the case for change. We need to show that the current system is unfair to Haringey schools and we need as many people as possible to take part in the consultation. You have until 25th May 2011.

Full information about the consultation can be found on this site: http://bit.ly/ehRD4i. Here you can find full consultation documents and a response form.

To make it as simple as possible for residents to respond, I have drafted a response you may want to email in to the consultation.

If you want to do so, you need to send the text below to the following email address:

schoolfunding.consultation@education.gsi.gov.uk

As well as using the standard email please also take the opportunity to add your own personal comments too.

Suggested consultation response:

“I am concerned about the current school funding system, which sees Haringey’s schools getting up to £1540 less per pupil than schools in neighbouring boroughs like Hackney and Camden. I think that the existing school funding formula should change to address this historical unfairness.

I am particularly keen to respond to questions 17 and 18 in the consultation document. I think that school-led factors should be included in the new funding formula, and in particular with regard to the area cost adjustment. The additional cost of employing teachers and other staff in Haringey should be recognised in the new formula, to address the huge cliff edge with neighbouring boroughs as outlined above. I would be grateful if you could include this view when collating consultation responses.”

Please do remember to email this in before the 25th May when the consultation closes. And do feel free to copy me in as well!

The second consultation, which will draw on responses from the first review, will look more at numbers, and will be launched in the summer. Rest assured, I will let you know once it goes live.

If you need any help or want to discuss any details further, please don’t hesitate either to email or call me to discuss (on 020 8340 5459).

Thank you ever so much for taking the time to read, and hopefully respond to the consultation. Hopefully, with lots of local residents doing their bit, we are one step closer to getting fairer funding for our children.

Kind regards,

Lynne
