Connecting Crouch End and Hornsey with news, views and information
I'm pretty sure that the premises on Topsfield Parade which used to be Nirvan ( a restaurant ) got a change of use to be an estate agent (offices). It has reopened today as 'Shelter' a charity shop.
So, this is good news and bad news. Its good that it is still retail, but not so good that it is another charity shop. I think the implication of charity is that the rent is too high and any business needs the advantages charity shops have (no business rates, voluntary unpaid staff) in order to survive.
The number of charity shops in CE is quite high , though this reviewer only gave us 3 out of 5 on this front.
I have heard complaints lately that charity shops are unfair competition to 'proper' retailers, because of the overhead advantages they have, so whilst selling used clothes is sort of OK (though beware CE's vintage quarter) selling stuff in direct competition with local retailers is not, and this branch of Shelter has a display of Christmas cards and crackers.
