Spotlight on Hornsey High Street

In order to publicise the rich heritage and character of Hornsey High Street, there is to be an exhibition of contemporary photos of its buildings and sights called "Hornsey High Street 2013". The exhibition will include
listed buildings such as the Great Northern Railway Tavern and the Church Tower; historic street furniture such as the obelisk drinking fountain;
Victorian shopping parades; Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian homes; green open spaces and street scenes.

Although much less well known than its neighbours, Crouch End and Muswell Hill, Hornsey High Street is the heart of the historic parish of Hornsey. It falls within three conservation areas - the High Street, Hornsey Water Works
and Hillfield Avenue. The High Street has had a lot of recent activities including the very successful Hornsey Music Festival and as a result the area is getting better known.

The exhibition is organised by HornseyN8 (see note below) and the Hornsey Traders and Stakeholders Association and will be held in the Three Compasses pub from the evening of Sunday 3rd November and continuing until the end of
November. It will be open during pub opening hours. There will be a number of other events connected with the exhibition including a tour of the High Street.

Dennis Bradley, Secretary of Hornsey Conservation Area Advisory Committee and a member of HornseyN8, said:

"The current planning application for the Sainsbury's supermarket and associated housing development could result in the greatest change to Hornsey High Street for many years. Before this happens it seems a good
idea to look at all the features we take for granted, or never take the time to see as we walk along it".

Notes for editors

HornseyN8 is a group of individuals and organisations in the High
Street/Priory Road area. It shares information about local issues and
events. The exhibition is also supported by the Hornsey Traders and
Stakeholders Association.
